VEHICLE DYNAMICS

Sub System Objective:

In charge of everything that makes the car corner as fast as possible and stop as quickly as possible.

Is required to coordinates the aerodynamic, brakes, and suspension system as a whole.

Summary:

Select the tires and base all simulations off that choice

Simulates and optimizes suspension points

Create overall Aero goals for total downforce and center of pressure location

Quantify max braking needed for the car.

Scope of Work:

Runs simulations on Lap sim, Vi-Grade, and Optimum Kinematics.

Orchestrates the vehicle setup though-out the season.

Suspension

Summary:

Designs everything that connects the wheels to the chassis.

Needs to coordinate with chassis lead to design a chassis in relation to suspension packaging.

Scope of Work:

Creates an outboard assembly in coordination with the drivetrain and brake systems.

Picks out dampers and springs for the car.

Designs uprights, control-arms, knuckles, and more.

Aerodynamics

Summary:

Designs all aerodynamic devices on the car through CFD simulations.

Scope of Work:

Helps manufacture the entire system in carbon fiber

Running simulations over multiple iterations to provide an optimized package.

Goals:

Design a manufacturable package that can easily be removed.

Lightweight package that is still stiff under high loads.

Brakes

Summary:

Calculates needed braking force to successfully stop the vehicle.

In charge of the ergonomics of the entire vehicle.

Scope of Work:

Picks out calipers and master cylinders according to calculations.

Designs a brake system from rotors, calipers, and pedals.

Manufacture the team’s own rotors and pedals.

Goals:
Design a consistent systems that operates the same every lap.

Create a system that breeds confidence inducing thoughts for the driver.

POWERTRAIN

Drivetrain

Summary:

In charge of directing all the power from the engine into the road.

Packages the differential and determines final drive ratios.

Scope of Work:

Designs axles, hubs, wheel centers, bearing carriers, and sprockets.

Calculates final drive ratio based off of power curve and tire characteristics.

Goals:

Create a system that reliably puts the power down to the ground.

Electrical

Summary:

Designs and manufacturing of electrical wiring harness and PCB components.

In charge of powering all components on the car

Scope of Work:

Creates PCB boards to control components like DRS and steering angle sensors

Selects sensors for obtaining data

Goals:

Create a reliable system that delivers accurate data.

Engine

Summary:

In charge of designing a powerful, reliable, and efficient engine

Decides on what motor the team will run each year

Scope of Work:

Redesigns internals, and tunes the motor to maximum effectiveness

In charge of cooling and fueling for the engine

Goals:

Create a motor that can run an endurance at full power while being able to save fuel and be efficient.

MANUFACTURING

Manufacturing System Lead

Summary:

The manufacturing group assists all other leads in machining or laying up their components. They are the backbone to making Zips Racing ideas into reality.

Scope of Work:

Sources out needed stock and materials for the car.

Helps teach younger members how to run manual mills and lathes.

Goals:

Manufacture an entire formula car once a year.

Machining

Summary:

Operates under the manufacture lead to machine components.

Scope of Work:

Operates CnC Mill and CnC Lathes as well as manual machines.

Assists other system leads in manufacturing components.

Goals:

Produce accurate to model components.

Composites

Summary:

Layup carbon fiber to design lightweight and strong components.

Scope of Work:

Paint, sand, and prime molds for layup.

Builds the Carbon fiber monocoque every year.

Lays up all aero components and any other small pieces needed by other systems.

Goals:

Design great looking carbon fiber components.
