Thanks so much to our sponsor Keysight for hosting an oscilloscope training day for our team! We’re glad our team members will have the opportunity to learn on such a high-quality instrument. We expect our debugging and validation time will be reduced, and our team members will graduate with practical experience using an engineering tool.
Thanks, Keysight!

On September 19, 2020, ZR20e drove for the first time. We had intended to drive this racecar at Summer 2020 competitions, but COVID threw a wrench in those plans. Since we’ve been allowed to resume work in our shop, we’ve put in many hours to get this car into a race-ready condition. After this first test drive, we discovered a few adjustments we need to make (that’s what testing is for!) and we plan to continue test driving throughout the fall semester as we develop designs for our 2021 vehicle.

This summer, Zips Racing Electric participated in SAE’s virtual competition. We were happy to be awarded 5th place for the Siemens Digital Twin Award! Applying for the award was a team effort, with contributions from the electronics, powertrain, and suspension subsystems. Go Zips!

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Zips Racing Electric continues to prepare for the 2021 competition season. Our team holds weekly meetings via Google Hangouts where we discuss the functionality of previous vehicles and goals for the upcoming year. This helps new members get up to speed on our past work, so they can contribute to the design of a new vehicle in the fall. It also allows us time to compile all we have learned throughout the past year and through participating in SAE’s virtual competition, so we can improve our static event performance in 2021 competitions. We have continued to pursue sponsorship from companies such as Keysight and Altium, who we are excited to work with this year!
We hope to be back in our shop and out on the racetrack soon!

Thanks to our sponsor Kvaser for publishing this article! We have learned a lot about CAN bus communication this year. CAN bus provides robust communication between our student-designed ECU and a variety of sensors. Our battery management system also puts data on the CAN bus, allowing our ECU to react to potential safety concerns.
